An app that connects IIMB alumni & faculty with news, job offers

For the first time, the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), has come up with a mobile application accessible by the institute's alumni as well as faculty, providing access to news and information related to the institute, as well as job offers. Since IIMB’s alumni are located around the world, it wasn’t easy to constantly update the contact list. The app makes it a breeze.

The app, called ’IIMB Alumni Association’, and available as a free download in the iTunes App Store, allows alumni to interact with each other as well as the institute. The app also allows users to search for registered alumni, filtering for the same city, and view job posts.

Updates, such as the appointment of a new director or chairperson, gets notified to all registered members using the 3.3-MB sized app, featuring menu options like Home, News, Events, Articles, Member Search, and Jobs. Registered alumni will have to log in using their credentials.

Rakesh Godhwani, head, alumni association, and adjunct faculty, IIMB, said: “It is mandatory to be a registered user because we have our alumni serving in important positions across the world and we wouldn’t want just anybody to have access to their contact details. Trust is very important.”

The plan for the app fell in place about six years ago, according to Godhwani. “Top schools in the West have this technology in place, but it is still catching on in India. But most of our students are on smartphones and we know for a fact that they would like to receive updates about the institute, so the app was made,” said Godhwani. The alumni association at IIMB is gearing up for a formal launch on May 10 at Anusmaran, their global meet.

“There are times when an alumnus serving in a good position in a company may know of a job opening there and may want others to apply for it. So that is where this jobs feature comes in handy,” explained Godhwani.

A team of students at IIMB designed the interface, while a professional developer took care of the software. Udit Sethia, secretary, alumni association, said: “Since we are just starting out, we wanted to keep it extremely simple. Later, we will develop and add new features, if required.”
