The body of a Gujarat fisherman, who had died under mysterious circumstances in a Pakistan jail, was flown to Mumbai from where it was taken to his native village, state fisheries department has said.
“A flight carrying the remains had landed in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon and following formalities, the officials of the fisheries department are on their way to Kishor Makwana’s native village Kob in Junagadh,” Gujarat Chief Fisheries Commissioner P L Darbar told PTI on Sunday.
The Gujarat government has made all arrangements for transporting the body to Makwana’s native place, he said.
Earlier, Makwana’s family had approached the Centre to help them travel to Pakistan to find out if he was alive as they had received a letter from a fellow inmate of his claiming Makwana was not dead.
Lanka Navy offers sweets, soft drinks to Indian fishermen
Rameswaram: Indian fishermen trawling near Katchatheevu were in for a big surprise on Sunday when Sri Lankan naval personnel not only allowed them to fish but also offered them soft drinks and sweets. Local fishermen Association leader Emerit said the Navy men chatted with the fishermen from Ramanathapuram and Jagadapattinam. The gesture follows the release of fishermen from Tamil Nadu lodged in Lankan prisons. Locals have in the past complained of attacks by the Lankan Navy while fishing near Katchatheevu, an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974.
