Driver commits suicide at Kalka

1 held for raping 5-yr-old girl

Panchkula, March 29
The police have arrested parents of a 17-year-old girl for allegedly selling her to a pimp and forcing her into prostitution. According to the information, the victim had spoken of her nightmarish experience to her lover, following which the boy took her to the police station.

The victim, with the help of the boy from Yamunanagar, approached the police last night and told them that her parents had sold her to pimps in Zirakpur.

The police arrested the parents Vicky Sharma and Priya Sharma from Jalandhar. Station house officer of the Sector 5 police station Inspector Malkit Singh said Vicky is the victim’s stepfather.

“The girl in her complaint said a deal of Rs 20,000 was struck by her parents with the pimp of Zirakpur, Rahul,” said Singh. Two other Chandigarh-based pimps are also involved in the crime and have been booked by the police. Police teams have already been sent to get hold of them.

The police have registered a case under Section 372 (selling a minor for prostitution), 373 (buying a minor for prostitution), 376-g-(gang rape) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO).

A Punjab Police constable died after his service weapon went off accidentally inside a bank in the Industrial Area, Phase II, this morning. The victim has been identified as Sukhdev Singh, 46.

Singh belonged to the 3rd Battalion of the IRB, Punjab, and was deployed in the PNB for the past two years. The victim was rushed to the PGI where doctors declared him brought dead.

Singh was reportedly cleaning his weapon when it went off accidentally. The bullet passed through his nose and then entered his skull, killing him instantly.

Over 50 hearing and speech impaired youngsters participated in a one-day soccer tournament, organised at the Football Stadium of Sector 17, here today. The 6th Punjab Deaf and Dumb Football Tournament was organised by the Punjab’s Football Association for Deaf and Dumb youngsters with an aim at encouraging the youth to uplift their standards. The championship was conducted in association with the newly-formed Chandigarh Players Welfare Association.

A total of five teams-Barnala, Ropar, Mohali, Chandigarh and Patiala participated in the championship. Barnala lifted the trophy. It defeated Ropar 2-0 in the final of the tournament.

Ankit, Sukhjinder hogged limelight in the tournament and displayed exceptionally well game skills. In the hard line match, Mohali beat Patiala 3-1.

Sharanjeet Singh of Barnala was adjudged the best player of the tournament.

“It’s for the first time that we have organised the tournament in Chandigarh. Though it has been organised in various cites of Punjab earlier. Our main purpose is to encourage the youngsters. For this particular tournament, they had undergone a precise practice sessions,” said Gupreet Bedi, head, Technical Committee.

Local kabaddi teams, in the men and women categories, registered win in their respective matches during the ongoing 25th Senior National Circle Championship for Men and Women. The championship was organised by Punjab Amateur Circle Kabaddi Association at Maloya, here today.

In the womens’ category, the local team defeated Rajasthan 12- 8, while the mens’ team trounced Maharashtra 24-6. Raider Harjeet collected 12 points for Chandigarh.

In other matches of mens’ category, Delhi defeated Bihar 28-11 with Pamma (9 points), Supinder (5 points) and Mohammad (6 points) collecting the major points.

In one-sided match, Tamil Naidu blanked Andhra Pradesh 28-8. Vadila scored 12 points and Purila claimed 8 points for the winning side.

Earlier, in other matches, Punjab defeated Uttar Pradesh 26-10, Haryana beat Rajasthan 28-16 , Delhi defeated Tamil Naidu 15-5 and Maharashtra defeated Andhra Pradesh 13- 9.

In the women’s matches, Haryana defeated Karnataka 20-14 and Punjab trounced Maharashtra 24-8.

Coaching Centre of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, will face Coaching Centre of Sector 42 in the final of the womens’ category during the ongoing State Handball Championship for Men and Women, tomorrow.

In the semifinal (womens’ category) played today, Coaching Centre Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, beat Coaching Centre Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, 18-17. For the winning side, Manisha contributed four goals, while Madhu and Kavita pumped in three goals each. For losing side, Khila (7 points) and Smriti (2 points) reduced the margin.

In another match, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, went down against Coaching Centre, Sector 42, 14-8 goals. Khusboo (5 points) initiated the team’s win and Jyoti contributed two goals. For DAV, Ayushi (3 points) and Sushmita (2 points) contributed the lion’s share. In junior category, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, beat Coaching Centre, Sector 42 (B) 17-15.

Junior tennis players Darshan Dilbar Singh and Nandini claimed the winning titles during Play and Stay (mini-tennis) Tennis Tournament, organised at the tennis courts of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) stadium, here today.

The tournament was orgnaised for boys and girls (U-10).

The event saw a good number of entries in both the boys and girls events.

In the boys’ category, Darshan Dilbar Singh defeated Yashashavi Balhara 2-4 and 4-1 (1).

In the girls’ category of the tennis tournament, Nandini beat Jiya 4-1 and 5-4 (5).
