Award-winning filmmaker Jaideep Varma feels that there are things which are more important than winning a National Award.
National Award just a line in the obituary, feels Jaideep Varma!
While Leaving Home-the Life & Music of Indian Ocean, India’s first non-fiction feature film to release nationally, had won Jaideep Varma the National Award, the award-winning filmmaker surprises us by saying, “For me, a National Award is just a line in your obituary! I just consider myself privileged that I made a film on a magnificent musical entity like ‘Indian Ocean’.”
Varma, who was in Vadodara for the screening of his latest documentary Baavra Mann (based on the life of Sudhir Mishra), sounded excited about his latest project.
He told us, “Sudhir Mishra, whom I know for 10 years, is a very intelligent person but it somehow doesn’t reflect in his works. That fascinated me. I love his movies and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi is my all-time favorite. I marvel at the way he has survived in the industry for almost three decades. Since he had liked my earlier works, he agreed because he knew that I wouldn’t sensationalize things. When I wanted to show him the first rough cut, he was keeping very busy and called me home around 1 am. Then, he sat through the almost three-hour long version but didn’t say much afterwards. So, I asked him if he didn’t like it and he said, ‘I stayed awake, that should tell you something!’ The film isn’t just about his life, it goes beyond that.”
