Flash floods in areas along Varuna river
VARANASI: The localities along the downstream of river Varuna faced a flash flood like situation after a gate of barrage of Puranapul broke on Friday morning.
According to sources, one of the gates of the barrage, which was repaired a few months back by irrigation department, broke at around 11am on Friday causing flash flood like situation in localities along the river.
It is worth to mention here that due to massive decline in the water level of river Varuna, the district administration had ensured the recharging of the river by discharging water of the Ganga from Gyanpur Canal a few days back.
With this step the water level had improved in upstream of Varuna. But, with Friday's incident the water level in upstream receded again massively. Fortunately no casualty was reported in the incident. Taking a serious note of the incident, the district magistrate Pranjal Yadav sought a report from irrigation department. They informed the DM that due to heavily polluted water the gate of barrage, made of iron sheets started rusting in a short period which led to the incident.
However, later the officials were told that the recently repaired gate had been damaged. DM said that he along with other officials will visit the incident site. He said that the irrigation department has been asked to work round the clock to ensure the repair of all the gates of the barrage within 10 days.
