Setalvad moves HC seeking anticipatory bail

The five were booked by DCB officials after a complaint lodged by Feroz Saeedkhan Pathan who used to live in Gulberg Society during the 2002 riots.

Social activist Teesta Setalvad has approached the Gujarat High Court (HC) seeking anticipatory bail in the Gulberg Society fund embezzlement case.

A case was registered against her, her husband Javed Anand and three others by Ahmedabad City Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) for alleged embezzlement of funds collected for the 2002 Gujarat riots victims. Setalvad has approached the HC after Ahmedabad City Civil & Sessions Court recently dismissed her anticipatory bail application.

Apart from Setalvad and Anand, three other accused named in the FIR include Tanvir Jafri, son of slain former Congress MP Ahsan Jafri, and Salim Sandhi and Feroz Gulzar Mohammed Pathan, chairman and secretary of Gulberg Society respectively.

Appearing for Setalvad, senior counsel from Supreme Court Dushyant Dave made an urgent mention of the petitions before the court of Justice Anant Dave on Thursday.

The petitions are likely to be heard by the court on Friday. According to the complainant, the accused had collected funds using the photographs of the riots victims. Also, Setalvad is accused of promising the victims of Gulberg Society to build a museum in the society which was never built. DCB officials have booked the five under the charges of breach of trust, cheating and conspiracy.
