    ACTIVITY: Subscooter ride in Mauritius
    FIRST PERSON ACCOUNT: Nimisha Tiwari

Imagine living the life of Nemo, a celebrated orangy clown fish. Often on, Nemo would smile at a group of beeming tourists riding near his coral reef home to catch a glimpse whilst offering bread as a friendship souvenir.Well, I was one of those enthusiasts who took a subscooter ride in Mauritian emerald-turquoise waters to find Nemo. By the end, I did not have the heart to surface into the real world. Here’s why...

GETTING STARTED: A group of chatty tourists assemble for subscooter rides at the popular Blue Safari submarines office in Trou aux Biches. As the honey-dew tanned officials start to address us with guidelines, we knew we are in for some amazing marine underwater adventure starting with glassbottom boat ride with a smart local captain.

BIKINI AND WET SUITS: Donning diving gear, girls sat pretty as pillion with their honeymooning partners (Mauritius is a great choice for Indian honeymooners, thanks to the proximity) on the subscooter. As luck would have it, I sat in the driving seat but solo. It was worth a chance, even when my throat was feeling parched anticipating the crashing waves we would witness soon after. As the subscooter deck was lowered, we all were a few meters underwater with only our heads concealed in a glass-like helmet that had oxygen pumped in to keep it above water.

GO FULL THROTTLE: Underwater, an instructor and photography diver would gesture with hand signs to instruct us to move forward as a team and stay together. I did press the sunscooter paddle frantically and found my scooter whizzing by in a hurry. But soon enough, I got the hang of the pace and enjoyed being the solitary underwater reaper.

FEED THE FISH, SAY HELLO FOR PICS: The divers gave us some bread to attract the fish and I tried spreading the crumbs all around me so the fish would move in a circle in front of my eyes akin to Tom & Jerry toon sessions. Say Cheese and Jazz hands were flashed for interesting snapshots.

SURFACE AND GET CERTIFIED: Post a 40-min underwater session, it was time to surface. We were at sea level within seconds. The trainer handed out our certificates and floral bikini pictures. These were handed over to us as memoirs of our ride, at a small fee at the end of the tour.

RECOMMENDED TRIP: It’s amazing to experience life under water. Marine ecosystem is fragile and we must conserve it for our good.
