LAHORE - Surge in gruesome incidents of heinous crimes especially against the minor girls as reported in the media on daily basis are reflective of poor law and order situation in Punjab, said Manzoor Wattoo, PPP’s central Punjab President Mian Manzoor Wattoo said in a statement.
He said that Punjab government’s top functionaries while confessing the rise in such crimes in the province were simply resorting to platitudes instead of formulating a holistic policy to deal with the grim situation which was going from bad to worse unabatedly.
He pointed out that after the incidents of Muzaffargarh and Chinout, similar occurrences of barbarity against women in Faislabad and Okara cast aspersions on the government and its utter failure to contain such abhorrent crimes.
Terming the law and order situation in the province frustrating, Wattoo said it called for an effective strategy by the mandarins to take on the problem on emergent basis. “Burying the head in the sand will not shy away the danger that is already giving the people sleepless nights”, Manzoor maintained.
The PPP leader said that the killing of two Police Inspectors yesterday was a bitter reminder of the tardiness of the government that seemed to have lost the political will to bring the culprits in the dock for exemplary punishment.
He advised the government to fix its priorities. “It should not be running after the showpiece projects, rather lay its focus on the maintenance of law and order”, he observed.
He cited the incident of Jati Umra, Village of the Prime Minister, when Punjab Government sprang into action leading to suspension of many policemen because a cat had killed a peacock in the residential premises of the Prime Minister.
“But regretfully the respect and dignity of the poor people by criminals is not considered as enough reason to take action against offender”, he remarked, adding that the criminals had unleashed the wave of crimes without fear of legal consequences.
