Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi, which stars singer Monali Thakur, has hit the screens. While 5,00,000 girls have been child trafficked in the last five years, only Lakshmi stood up and fought back. This is the story of a 14-year-old girl who was sold into the flesh trade. She fought her traffickers in a court of law to bring their prostitution racket to its knees, even though everyone told her it would be impossible.

In a landmark judgement, the courts spoke in favour of her. Lakshmi is an ode to all the women in India who have stood up against their tormentors. The film is about the indomitable spirit and the fight for one’s respect and dignity. Delhi-based Pramod Sharma, one of the producers, was excited when he heard this heroic tale. He says, “Hope this film creates sensitivity in the audience, so there is never another Nirbhaya or a young Lakshmi sold to flesh trafficking ever.”
Lakshmi, presented by Jayantilal Gada (Pen), produced by UV News Media and Communications Ltd and A Kukunoor Movies Production, is playing in cinema halls through PVR Pictures.
