Cane charge at BJP-BJYM protest leaves five injured
ALLAHABAD: At least five Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers sustained injuries on Thursday when police resorted to cane-charge to disperse a protest meet near Cotton Mill trisection against the killing of BJYM leader Vimal Pandey alias Chotu the previous evening.
Pandey was gunned down by a group of three unknown assailants near Mewalal Ki Bagia trisection under Naini police station on Wednesday evening.
Holding a protest, the BJP and BJYM workers also alleged that the police, at the behest of ruling party leaders, had also thrashed the family members and relatives of the victim who were demanding justice and compensation.
BJYM district president Sanjeev Jaiswal, who sustained injuries in the police lathi-charge, told TOI, "The BJP and BJYM workers were intentionally targeted by police when they were taking the body of the deceased party worker to Arail ghat for last rites." He said the police cane-charged the party workers without provocation, despite the fact that they had done nothing to disturb the law and order in the city.
Meanwhile, police authorities claimed that the police used mild force to disperse the agitators when the latter pelted stones on vehicles parked by the roadside and some shops. Officials also added that the workers were chased away from the spot when they were trying to block traffic movement on busy Allahabad-Mirzapur road. The agitating mob had ransacked the window panes of four buses and two other vehicles, they said.
Deputy SP, Karchana told TOI, "The police used mild force to disperse the agitating crowd as they were trying to disturb the peace of the area." He added that police had already assured the crowd prompt action in the incident.
