Kolkata, so far a hit with Bengali directors in Bollywood, is slowly making a foray into mainstream cinema. Dharmesh Darshan, maker of Raja Hindustani, Mela and Dhadkan, among others, is planning a romantic film, the backdrop of which is likely to be the City of Joy. The filmmaker spent a quiet Holi in the city.
You either hate the city or love it, but theres no ignoring Kolkata.
This is my first visit and I came with a definite purpose. The script of my next movie is likely to have elements of Kolkata. Everywhere I went, I was told, This is 150 years old, That is 175 years old. I want to capture the city in all its glory, said Dharmesh.
Though he is tightlipped about the films storyline, the director is keen on casting Bengali actors. Curiously, his father, Darshan Sabharwal, had produced a hit film, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, in the 60s that starred Bengali actors Sharmila Tagore and Biswajeet. From Suchitra Sen to Prosenjit, I am clued into Bengali cinema. Also, I am a big fan of Bengali literature. Though I didnt play with colours on Holi, I visited Prinsep Ghat, Mallick Ghat and Eden Gardens. I, however, missed out on Tollygunge Kolkatas film para, the director rued.
Dharmesh is planning to return soon. Im fascinated by the haunting romanticism of Bengal. The idea is to capture the citys glory, not decadence. Kolkata is a great survivor. Ill come back soon with my next, he added.
