The Vadodara zoo which was awaiting the arrival of emus after 33 eggs were in incubation last month, has had a disheartening result. Only one emu chick survived out of the three born. Zoo staff says most eggs were crushed under the feet of older emus.
In December last year, zoo officials were counting on about 33 eggs that were in incubation – higher than the last breeding season.
However, since the survival rate of the bird is low, the officials did not predict the results. Now, only one chick has survived. C B Patel, incharge zoo curator, said, “Only one emu has been born out of this season.”
