A Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was allegedly shot at by unidentified assailants in Badlapur on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Badlapur police, the incident took place around 12.30 pm at Gandhi Chowk in Badlapur. Yogesh Raut (30), the Badlapur City vice-president of the NCP, was walking towards his car after having lunch at a hotel in the area when the assailants struck, the police said.
“Around three to four men opened fire at Raut, when he was walking towards his Scorpio, and one of the bullets hit him in the chest. The men fled the spot in a car, and Raut was rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to AIMS Hospital in Dombivli,” said an officer with the Badlapur police.
The police are making inquiries with his family and friends in order to ascertain if there was a possible murder attempt behind the attack. A complaint of murder has been registered against unidentified persons under the Indian Penal Code, and inquiries are under way, the police said.
“Raut seems to have had some personal rivalry with a couple of people, and we are probing whether any of these led to the attack,” the officer added.
