A very famous sacred place of South Kashmir, Khana Baran is located in the Devsar village of district Kulgam, in the foothills of PeerPanchal range of lofty Himalaya. Comprising of two words Khana (meaning Pass) & Baran (meaning gate). This sacred place is worshipped as abode of Mata Tripur Sundari. It is a centre of great attraction and reverence for people in thousands irrespective of religious belongingness and faith. Not only Hindus but the people from Muslim and Sikh community’s locals as well as non-locals look towards it with great respect and pay obeisance here for the attainment of mental peace and spiritual solace. Nobody dares to cut any branch of the pine trees shadowing this sacred place or the flower bushes in its surroundings. Those who have done it intentionally or un-intentionally are said to have suffered either loss of life or property. It is with utmost devotion that people use the soil of the premises to give healing touch to skin ailments and for relieving mental   tensions.
Khana Baran is believed to be a very dear to her place of Mata Tripur Sundari, the incarnation of Maa Durga. The Param Bhakts are said to have had the Darshan of Mata Tripur Sundari riding on a mighty lion which they have expressed in Mata’s Bhajans penned down by them.
I being a student of twenties have heard only from my parents about the greatness of this most revered place but when I got a chance to pay my obeisance here, found myself graceful and blessed  in my studies as well as in my thoughts. Thanks to Mata Tripur Sundari Sewa Sanasthan Devsar who has been arranging yatra tours to this pilgrimage in south Kashmir. The young especially the ones studying outside the state are being provided a chance not only to know the valleys spiritual wealth but also to see the land to which they belong and have the roots of identity in. When I was there at Khana Baran, I was thrilled to see devotees from all religions praying together, eating in common Langer, hugging and blessing one another .It was a scene worth seeing.  The devotees use to come to this place throughout the year but on the eighth day of Zeesht Shukla Pakhsha every year people in thousands visit KhanaBaran Asthapan.
