Two police constables chasing a car that had zoomed past a nakabandi suffered serious injuries after a speeding taxi hit their bike near Mantralaya junction on Saturday night.

According to the Marine Drive police, joint commissioner of police, traffic, B K Upadhyay had instructed his department to carry out a drive against drunk and negligent drivers between 9pm on Saturday till 4am on Sunday. Accordingly, a team from the Colaba traffic division had set up a curb at BD Somani Chowk, near Parsi Gymkhana, Marine Drive.

Around 10.45 pm on Saturday, a red coloured Maruti Zen approached the spot. When the traffic staff signalled the driver to stop, he did not follow the instructions and rather zipped through. No one took down the registration number of the vehicle.

Constables Sunil Tibe and Anil Karande, both aged 30, decided to chase down the suspect car on a bike. While Tibe was riding the two-wheeler, Karande was sitting behind. The cops followed the car, which was moving at high speed towards Air India building.

"The constables then took a left turn from Air India junction and proceeded towards Mantralaya through Madam Cama Road. As their bike neared the Gandhi Garden bus stop around 11pm, a fast approaching taxi from the opposite direction hit their bike," said a police officer from Marine Drive police station.

He added that due to the impact of the collision, both the constables, who were not wearing helmets, were flung off the bike and sustained severe injuries. Karande somehow managed to inform his colleagues about the mishap from his mobile phone.

Staff from traffic department and the Marine Drive police reached to the spot, took taxi driver Mohammad Javed Abdul Aziz Ansari into custody and rushed both the injured constables to Bombay Hospital.

Ansari, 42, a resident of Khalil Chawl at Dauri Nagar near Vakola Bridge in Santacruz (E) was arrested on Sunday around 2.35am and was booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving.
