New mother, 31, jumps off eighth floor of building

She had been depressed since the birth of her child.

A 31-year-old woman, who had given birth to a baby boy just three months ago, committed suicide on Saturday morning by jumping off the eighth floor of one of the 18-storey Marathon Maxima residential towers in Mulund-West, where she had been staying with her mother.

Jaena Vishal Pandya had been suffering from depression since the birth of her baby, police officers said. Pandya was rushed to Mulund General Hospital but was declared dead on admission. She had suffered multiple fractures.

Pandya, who got married two years ago and had been living in Bangalore, came to Mumbai to stay with her mother during her pregnancy. On Saturday, Pandya woke up at around 6.45 am and had breakfast. She even had a casual conversation with her mother that morning before she left the fifth floor flat without informing anyone.

She made her way to the eighth floor which was the building’s refuge area, and jumped to her death at around 8.30 am. The closed circuit cameras in the passage of the building show Pandya taking the elevator to go to the eighth floor, said police.

“The building security guard and supervisor saw the deceased fall to the ground. The supervisor was in the process of assigning the day’s work to the other guards. They rushed to the fifth floor and informed Pandya’s family,” said a cop from Mulund police station.

“We registered a case of accidental death on Saturday and handed over the woman’s body to her family. Her family told us that Pandya was undergoing medical treatment as she had not been keeping well since her delivery,” said the police official. A post-mortem was conducted at civicrun Rajawadi Hospital.
