ome Minister Gamawan Fauzi said JakartaGovernor Joko Widodo had to obtain permission from President Susilo BambangYudhoyono if he planned to run for president representing the Indonesian DemocraticParty of Struggle (PDI-P).
'Any governor who runs for president needs to acquire his or her non-active status, which can only be approved by the President," Gamawan said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The minister said this was regulated by Law No. 42/2008 on presidential elections.
"So a governor, who has been nominated by a political party or a group of parties for a presidential election, has to seek permission from the President," he said.
Jokowi said earlier on Friday that he was ready to run for president on the PDI-P ticket. (atw)
