Kotwali Police Station OC Emdadul Haq said Khadiza Begum of Barha Bhekutia had been arrested on Wednesday night over the killing.

He identified the deceased as 40-year old Mofizur Rahman hailing from the Sadar Upazila’s Tapashidanga.

Khadiza had told police that Mofizur was married to two of her nieces and he was harassing her daughter Hafiza Begum, a ninth grader.

The teenager was sent to Dhaka to her elder brother as Mofizur continued pursuing her despite warnings, she said.

Khadiza had lodged a police complaint against Mofizur last week over the harassment.

Police went to Mofizur’s home to detain him but he was away.

Speaking to reporters at the police station, Khadiza said the man paid frequent visits to her home to learn about her daughter’s whereabouts.

Locals spread rumors implicating the two following which she said she had planned the killing.

When Mofizur came to her house on Wednesday night, she sprayed dry chili powder on his eyes and struck him repeatedly with a chopper.

Locals rushed Mofizur to Jessore General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
