Finally, Shiney lands a role
Shunned by the Bhatts, welcomed back by Anees Bazmee.

Shiney Ahuja, whose last screen appearance was in the quickly forgotten Ghost (2012), has finally landed a film. He has been signed for Anees Bazmee’s Welcome Back in a pivotal role.

Mirror had reported (“No work, only sympathy,” February 28) how the Bhatts, who were almost like family once, turned him away when he went knocking on their door for work.

Bhatt had then said, “Shiney knew that I would meet him warmly, and I did." He then called his three directors, Vikram Bhatt, Mohit Suri and Karan Dara, and told them to consider Shiney as a potential candidate for key roles in their upcoming ventures. However, the trio had serious reservations about taking him on board given that the court case against him is still pending.

Help came from unlikely quarters. Bazmee called him over and told him he had an interesting role. “It is an extremely funny character and Shiney is really excited,” reveals a source, pointing out that though the actor has never played a comic character before, the producers are convinced that he will be able to pull it off and the film will resurrect his career. "His character is infatuated with both Shruti Haasan, and Dimple Kapadia’s daughter (a new face) in the film,” the source said.

When contacted, Bazmee confirmed the news saying: “Yes, it’s true that I’ve signed Shiney for Welcome Back. He has a very funny role and we are kicked about teaming up with him."

Shiney has been accused of rape by his former domestic help. Isn't Bazmee worried about legal complications that may hamper the release of his film? Bazmee retorted, “Our schedule will wrap up very fast and the release is scheduled for December 2014. We are not worried about anything. I don’t know why Bhatts dropped him. Their production house was like a second home to him.”

Shiney is ecstatic about the offer. He quickly responded: “Ït’s a blessing for me and a privilege to work with Anees bhai, a director with a rare combination of positive energy and wisdom of a veteran. I am happy to be a part of the Welcome Back team.”

The first schedule of the film, which has an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, John Abraham, Shruti Hassan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal, has already been completed in Dubai. The second schedule will roll soon.
