Overhaul for BBMP markets

BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) markets soon will get a swanky new look, if the proposed plan gets approved.The BBMP has short listed markets which are old and need immediate renovation.Last year, the Council had approved face lift of Mavalli, Lakkasandra, Cox Town and Yediyur markets. But funds were not allocated in the last year’s budget. “We hope it will not be a project on paper, and funds will be allocated for these markets at least this year,” a BBMP officials said.Apart from this, the BBMP has entered into a joint venture with Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to renovate four other markets.Funds for markets at Jayanagar, Malleswaram, K R Puram and Seshadripuram has been approved. Also, the BBMP is planning to enter into a joint venture with Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to renovate Kalasipalya market.Sources said that Gandhi Bazar market is approved by the State Government, while a request has been sent to improve Johnson market.A BBMP official however opined that the shops in the present condition is not advisable for renovation as they were in bad state.
