Behrampore: Voicing his reservation over
Indranil Sen contesting
Lok Sabha election with a Trinamool ticket from Behrampore, Murshidabad working president of the party Humayun Kabir on Thursday said Sen was no match for
Adhir Chowdhury and being an outsider, he was unfit to take on the Congress strongman.
Claiming he was echoing the thoughts of most Trinamool workers in Murshidabad, Kabir said he had told party supremo Mamata Banerjee that it would be wise to drop Sen from Behrampore constituency.
"It would be nice if we had someone of the stature of Dev or
Moon Moon Sen to take on Adhir here," said Kabir, who had to resign as minister in the Mamata Banerjee government after he lost last Rejinagar assembly bypolls. The erstwhile Adhir loyalist had won the seat in 2011 on a Congress ticket and then vacated it when he defected to the Trinamool.
Trinamool district president Mohammad Ali said, "It was Humayun's personal opinion. I did not notice any opposition to Sen's candidature among party workers."
Political observers believe that Mamata chose to field an outside candidate for Behrampore to overcome factional fights within the Murshidabad Trinamool unit. Adhir Chowdhury described Mamata's decision to field a celebrity against him as a stunt. "Whoever is the candidate, my fight is with Trinamool on one hand and CPM on the other," said Adhir.
