on-active Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah and her younger brother Tubagus Chaeri Wardhana a.k.a. Wawan, as the president commissioner of PT Bali Pasific Pragama, met with Akil Mochtar, then Constitutional Court chief justice, in Singapore, a court heard on Thursday.
The fact was revealed during the reading out of Wawan's indictment in a trial session that had been delayed for more than a week as he had reportedly fallen sick.
'On Sept.22, 2013, in the lobby of the Hotel JW Marriott in Singapore, the defendant attended a meeting between Ratu Atut Chosiyah and Akil Mochtar. During the meeting, the governor asked Akil to help Amir Hamzah and Kasmin win the Lebak electoral dispute case and promised to prepare some money via the defendant for the handling of the case,' said Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Edy Hartoyo as quoted by Antara.
Candidate pair Amir Hamzah and Kasmin asked the court to cancel a Lebak General Elections Commission (KPUD) decision that declared Iti Oktavia Jayabaya-Ade Sumardi the winner of the election in the regency. The court was also asked to order Lebak KPUD to recount the votes in all polling stations.
Akil presided over a three-member panel of judges, including Anwar Usman and Maria Farida Indrati, which handled the Lebak election dispute case.
'The defendant knew that Rp 1 billion [US$87,000] worth of bribes was given to Akil Mochtar via Susi Tur Andayani [Wawan's accomplice who has also been named a suspect], with the aim of Akil, as a constitutional judge who also chaired the panel of judges, fulfilling the request submitted by Amir Hamzah-Kasmin as a candidate pair of Lebak regent and deputy regent,' said the prosecutor.
Besides the Lebak election, Wawan was also charged for allegedly giving Rp 7.5 billion in bribes to the court over the handling of the Banten election dispute case.
On the indictment, Wawan said he understood and had filed an exception.
'He did not 'reject' or 'accept' the indictment. He [Wawan] just said he understood,' Wawan's lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution said, refusing to detail Wawan points of exception. (ebf)
