SARIKEI: Area Neighbourhood Committees (KRT) in the division are encouraged to set up their own volunteer patrol unit (SRS).

Divisional Unity Officer Norkamal Abdul Malek in making the call said a SRS unit could contribute immensely to help curb crime in their areas.

According to him, the police had acknowledged that crime index in areas where there were SRS units recorded a lower crime rate compared to those without.

That was despite the fact that the SRS units could only conduct two patrols in a week, he said.

“Given the encouraging results, the police want the SRS units to carry out daily patrol. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of volunteers, SRS could not cope up with the demand,” he said. most SRS units in the division take in a minimum number of volunteers – that is 20 only.

According to Norkamal, out of 67 KRTs in the division, 25 had already set up SRS units, among the latest were those set up by KRT BDC Industri, KRT Kerubong Ili and KRT Skim B Zon 2.

Applications from another two local KRTs to set up SRS units were still being processed, noted Norkamal, who believed they would be approved anytime soon.
