12 get life in Bachchu murder case

A Khulna court has sentenced to life 12 people for murder of a Union Council chairman in Kushtia.

Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Akhtar Hossain handed down the verdict on Wednesday.

The court also acquitted 23 accused as charges were not proved against them, state counsel Enamul Haque said.

The sensational case was shifted to Khulna’s speedy trial tribunal from the Kushtia court on July 16 last year on the home ministry’s orders.

Those awarded life imprisonment are Ibrahim, Habil, Shamim, Islam, Zia, Dablu, Saheb, Jahangir aka Babu, Razzak, Arif Khan Mithu, Manik and Mukul Hossain.
Of them, Ibrahim was fined Tk 300,000. Failing to pay the fine will extend his jail term by two more years.
The others were fined Tk 25,000 each, failing which their jail term will be extended by six more months.
Some miscreants had shot dead UP Chairman Jamil Hossain Bachchu on July 25, 2009.
His brother filed the case with the Kumarkhali Police the next day.
Investigation Officer SI Nasir Uddin pressed charges against 35 people.
Some 23 out of 44 witnesses testified in the case.
