SGCCI to run state's 1st urban resource centre
SURAT: Soon, the residents in the Diamond City would be able to avail the services of painter, plumber, electrician and mason at their doorsteps.
The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGhas tied up with Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to run the state's first Urban Resource Centre (URC) and Skill Exchange Promotion Centre (SEPC) set up at the cost of Rs 2 crore at Bamroli.
The SGCCI has started the task of compiling a comprehensive data of skilled and unskilled workers in textile, textile engineering, diamond industry and construction sectors.

Kamlesh Yagnik, president, SGCCI, said, "The URC building is ready for use and the civic body has handed over its possession to us. We have started staff recruitment from Tuesday."
He said those requiring the services of skilled and unskilled artisans like textile workers, diamond workers, painters, plumbers, technicians, electricians and fitters would have to get in touch with the URC for the name and contact details of the desired artisan.
Sources said the SGCCI will start a drive to spread awareness among the skilled and unskilled workers in the diamond city to get themselves registered at the SEPC.
"The textile and diamond units have been facing shortage of workers. The URC could go a long way to solve the problem faced by the industry," said Jitu Vakharia, president, South Gujarat Textile Processors Association.
