Tuki cabinet to push for anti-racism law

Itanagar: Cutting across political affiliations, all members of the state assembly on Tuesday condemned the killing of Arunachal student Nido Tania in New Delhi and unanimously resolved to urge the Centre for a strong anti-racism act.
CM Nabam Tuki, responding to a private member resolution brought by Congress's Bamang Felix, gave an account of Tania's murder and the steps taken by his government.
He informed the assembly that the death had rocked the entire nation.
"The Centre, responding to a plea of the state government, handed over the case to CBI and constituted a committee to look into the issues affecting people from the northeast in Delhi," Tuki said.
Parliamentary secretary for health and family welfare, and Tania's father, Nido Pavitra had demanded a strong anti-racism law and exemplary punishment for the culprits.
While moving the resolution, Felix said the entire country had unequivocally condemned the incident and there was nothing to stop the Centre from enacting such a law.
The house adopted another private member resolution initiated by Congress MLA Karya Bagang and resolved to begin dialogue with the Centre for oil storage depots at Bhalukpong, Likabali, Pasighat, Roing, Namsai, Miao, Deomali and Kanubari. This, government sources said, would minimize the suffering of the state's people during economic blockades imposed by organizations in Assam.
