MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada district police on Saturday nabbed a person and recovered 120g of heroin and counterfeit currency from his possession at Adkaru Vinobha Nagar in Jalsoor village in Sullia taluk. While preliminary investigations have revealed that the drug confiscated is heroin, police maintained that the substance recovered will be sent to FSL at Bangalore for confirmation.
Street value of a kg of heroin is Rs 2.5 crore.
A police team headed by Sullia Circle Police Inspector B S Satisha working on a tip off that a person was carrying drugs and counterfeit notes on a motorcycle started inspecting all vehicles at Adkaru on the road leading to Sri Subrahmaya Temple. The police spotted a person astride a motorcycle around 9am and signalled him to stop for inspection. When the person tried to speed away, the police personnel intercepted and questioned him.
T P Shivakumar, additional superintendent of police told reporters that during questioning, the accused identified himself as K M Imtiyaz, 30, resident of Sheni village of Yenmakaje in neighbouring Kasargod district. Shivakumar said police recovered 148 counterfeit notes of face value Rs 500 and 22 counterfeit notes of face value Rs 100 as well as Rs 180 in cash from his possession. Police seized the motorcycle and a mobile phone on the accused.
Noting that value of drugs, and other property seized is Rs 31.12-lakh, he said heroin alone is estimated to be valued at Rs 30 lakh. Asserting that based on experience and preliminary tests police have concluded they had indeed seized heroin from Imtiyaz, he said FSL reports will confirm that. The accused will be produced before the magistrate after questioning him, Shivakumar said, adding as per initial investigation, the accused was acting alone.
