What you need to know:

Not disappointed. Programme coordinator says the pupils did not disappoint the company and they will be sponsored in their A-Level.

Kampala- The 24 pioneer beneficiaries of the Monitor Bus of excellence Scholarship programme have not disappointed their sponsors by taking top slots in the just released UCE results.

Twenty pupils of the 24 passed in Division One and the four others passed with a strong division two.
The programme is an initiative of Monitor Publications. It was started in 2010 where some of the best performers in the 2009 Primary Leaving Examinations were selected to benefit from scholarships for the O-Level.

The students were chosen by the Uganda National Examinations Board based on the strength of their PLE performance in each of the regions.

But the just released results have shown that excellent performance at regional level, may not necessarily translate into the same performance at national level because of other reasons rather than tuition.

Parents excited
“He told us he was not feeling well when he sat the examinations. We are wondering why he performed poorly yet he scored aggregate 4 in PLE as a pupil of St Kizito Primary School in Lira,” said Susan Ojok mother of Louis Okello who was studying from Namilyango College on the scholarship.

“We are also surprised about his performance this time because in P7 he scored aggregate 4 at Iganga Boys Primary School but he complained that Chemistry, Technical Drawing and French were particularly bad for him during exams,” Keene Mugabi father of Waiswa Lazarus Keene, another beneficiary of the scholarship, said. Waiswa scored aggregate 25 at Namilyango College.

Judith Nalukwago from Mt St Mary’s College Namagunga who scored 4 at P7 made it again by scoring aggregates 8.
According to Jackie Tuhakanazibwa, the project coordinator, MPL will continue sponsoring the students when they join A-Level.

“Today we celebrate success of the pioneers of the Monitor bus programme. We are glad they have not disappointed us. This is in our effort to nurture future leaders and as part of our corporate social responsibility,” Ms Tahakanizibwa said.

“MPL hopes to mould citizens who will contribute to leadership and nation building,” she added.
