JAIPUR: The mysterious theft at the residence of BJP MLA Hari Singh Rawat at Bhim in Rajsamand district turned out to be a rude shock for his family as the legislator's daughter-in-law was found to be behind the incident.
The police on Tuesday arrested the woman and her nephew for stealing items worth Rs 7 lakh including silver and gold jewellery.
On Friday, when Hari Singh Rawat was in Jaipur and his wife along with elder son and daughter-in-law had gone to Gandhidham (Gujarat), the family got news of burglary from their younger daughter-in-law Nisha Devi.
Nisha's husband had gone to Rajsamand town.
According to the police, at 9pm on Friday, the woman started screaming and came out of the triple-storey house saying that a burglar had decamped with gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh and a cash of Rs 2 lakh. "We got information at 9.30 pm and a team of police and FSL experts and dog squad rushed to the spot," said Ganesha Ram, station house officer, Bhim police station on Tuesday.
Till Sunday, the police faced the ire of supporters of MLA Rawat, his family and others who lambasted them for their poor patrolling and lethargy that made burglars target the house of even a sitting legislator.
"While we inspected the triple-storey house, we found that the safes in the room from which jewellery and cash were stolen were in tact. It was clear that somebody used the original keys of the almirahs and safes to open them. That confirmed that somebody from the house itself is behind the burglary. Secondly, Nisha in order to mislead, said she was thrashed by the burglar who surprisingly ran away not by using the main door but by a window situated on the back side of the house."

Later, police sternly questioned the woman who confessed to her role in the crime. "While the MLA was in Jaipur, other family members were in Gandhidham and the husband of accused woman Ranjeet Singh too was away, the woman invited her nephew Dharmendra Singh (19) who entered the first floor where the legislator used to stay and escaped with the items."
The woman and her nephew were taken on a one-day police custody after being produced in a local court on Tuesday.
"She said that the financial condition of her parental home was weak and she needed money for them," said police.
Meanwhile, the legislator clearly told the police to take action as per law as the family has decided not to show mercy towards the daughter-in-law.
