Second Period Outburst Does In Piper Men

2/23/2014 4:15:00 PM

Box Score Two quick goal outbursts was too much for the HU men's hockey team to overcome. They dropped their season finale, 8-3, to St. Mary's Sunday at Ken Yackel Arena.

The Pipers (2-22-1 overall, 1-15 MIAC) gave up five power play goals -- three during a third period major.

Brandon Zurn, Jorl Scatterelli and Kevin Novakovich had the HU goals.

After losing a wild 6-5 OT decision Saturday in Winona, Hamline came out tighter. The result was a mere five shots on goal between the two teams with no scoring.

SMU broke free for four goals in the first nine minutes of the second period and took charge of the game. Zurn blunted the SMU charge with his fifth goal of the year but the Cards replied in kind before the period ended.

In the third, SMU took advantage of five-minute major on Hamline's Diego Wilson to score three more times. Scatterelli and Novakovich (a team high 9th) found the net for the Pipers but the margin was too big to handle.

HU had four seniors --Grant Fahnhorst (injured),  Ryan McElhone, Joe Moore and Zach Johnson.
