Outré statement lips

Red isn’t the only way to go. There's bold pinks, berries and browns too

While we haven’t yet met a bright red lip we didn’t like, this shade of red is not the be all and end all of the bold pucker. Our fashion-forward celebs have recently been caught playing with a far more adventurous and exciting palette of pinks, tangerines, purples, berries and browns.

Candy pink is as girly as a lip colour can get. But when you’re wearing an outfit in a pale colour like Mandy Moore is, the colour burst really lifts up the look. Keep it tone-on-tone with a blush in the same hue.

Hot fuchsia makes quite the statement but doesn’t need an eclectic personality to wear it right. Take a cue from Jessica Alba and upgrade the black-dress-red-lips combo with this shade.

Cerise instantly helps add colour to your face. Case in point Kristen Stewart’s usually alabaster skin tone looks much livelier with this deep shade of pink. Use it to introduce colour in a monochrome ensemble ala Giles Spring/Summer 2013.

Sherbet lives precariously between pink and red, which allows it to strike a balance between saccharine and sexy. Emily Blunt used it add punch to her pastel peach Marios Schwab lattice dress.

Raspberry is deeper and darker than red, but stops just before crossing over into Goth territory. Priyanka Chopra used this deep rose-raspberry shade for a muted, subdued twist on the classic at the Marrakech Film Festival this year.

Tangerine gives you the impact of a bright red, but with a modern, eclectic edge. If you are going to wear this colour, why play it safe? Contrast it with a minty green; the pairing worked in Fan Bingbing’s favour at Cannes this year.

Terracotta may be an unusual lip colour but it really complements warm Indian skin. Mad Men’s January Jones wore terracotta lips to the SAG Awards and got the whole beauty blogosphere talking about it.

Wine stained lips were a huge global A/W trend also embraced by many play-it-safe Bollywood celebs. Anushka Sharma keeps the eyes light, lest it come off vampy.

Chocolate lips tend to age and date the wearer, but when we saw Claire Danes walk onto the SAG Awards red carpet with super dark lips that just drew you in we barely even noticed her Givenchy dress.

Purple lip colours. Yes, they’re a little out there but #YOLO and all that. To see Shruti Hassan wearing a violet lippie at the 2013 Filmfare nominations bash was a big surprise. She sure made things a whole lot more interesting on an otherwise staid red carpet that night.
