BRIEF: Hillsboro in the running for Google Fiber; Mayor Jerry Willey cites 'need for speed' [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 19--It's not every day Mayor Jerry Willey gets to work in a Top Gun reference.

But the recent announcement that Hillsboro is among nine metro areas (including Portland) being considered for Google's fiber optic network was just the occasion.

The ultra high-speed network is, well, really fast. Google Fiber offers Internet connections that run 1 gigabit per second â?? roughly 100 times the current U.S. average, according to the Oregonian's Mike Rogoway. Although Google will not charge cities for the connection, it will need assistance in setting it up.

In a joint Hillsboro-Beaverton press release, Willey enthusiastically endorsed the possibility that Oregon's fifth largest city could get the rapid connection.

"Just as they did in the movie Top Gun, we have a need for speed," Willey said. "The next leap to gigabit Internet will spark innovations that are unimaginable today, just as the shift from dial-up to broadband did before." - Katherine Driessen ___ (c)2014 The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.)
