Hungarian Parliament Debates Olympic Bid
Parliament began general debate on Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics yesterday, with Fidesz MP Erik Bánki declaring in the keynote speech that there is exemplary social unity behind the initiative, adding that such consensus is “as rare in Hungarian public affairs as a white raven”. The potential revenue for the economy could reach Ft 1.1 trillion, while the investments required to stage the games would not exceed Ft 774 billion, he said.

In reply, Socialist Zoltán Lukács said his party trusted the cabinet regarding the 2017 World Swimming Championships, but the costs have grown in two weeks, the construction works have been awarded without a tender process, and land is being taken away from the 13th District, therefore there is no confidence in the government’s handling of the Olympics.

Jobbik’s György Szilágyi said it is important that Hungary present its past and future achievements to the world as a major sports power.
