The Bharatiya Janata Party, trying to take control of as many zilla and taluk panchayats in the elections, is actually eyeing the next Assembly elections and its current efforts are only to strengthen its weakened base in rural and semi-urban centres of the State, if the remarks of the party’s national vice-president B.S. Yeddyurappa at an election meeting are any indication.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, who undertook a day-long tour to address election meetings on Sunday, called upon the voters to support the BJP in these elections so that it could oust the “inefficient” Congress government from the power in the next Assembly elections. He likened Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s governance to the epitome of inefficiency and misrule at the cost of development and progress. He alleged that the Chief minister was protecting his own Ministers, rather than focussing on development work.
Merely announcing development works was not enough and they need to be supported by adequate financial allocations and expeditiously implemented, he said.
The government had not been able to solve problems of the farmers facing severe drought conditions and crop losses. Many farmers committed suicide under financial duress during last one year due to misrule in the State, he said.
Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the return of Congress in power in the State was precisely due to internal differences in the BJP; the Congress was a beneficiary of negative vote and not the positive. All the BJP leaders had realised their mistakes and were united now. “The Congress government has turned out to be anti-farmer and anti-people in Karnataka, and need to be replaced by a pro-people government,” he said.
