'The Angry Birds Movie' scores over non-starry Hindi releases in what trade pundits term as the worst weekend of this year so far

Last Friday’s movie menu threw up an interesting assortment of releases, but cine-goers were hardly tempted, resulting in sluggish business at the ticket counters.

Bollywood offered Veerappan, Waiting, Phobia and Fredrick, of which only the first one received a relatively better response in single screen theatres — but only in certain parts of the country. With lower screen count, Waiting and Phobia obviously found it hard to compete with the real life bandit saga despite earning rave reviews. Fredrick, a small budget flick, sank without a trace.

The audience preferred to put their money on Hollywood animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, as it emerged as the top draw of last weekend.
Trade expert Amod Mehra labels last weekend as one of the worst that 2016 has seen so far. “All new films bombed at the cash counters, though Waiting and Phobia received critical acclaim. Angry Birds registered better numbers than current releases,” he says.
Echoing Mehra’s views on Angry Birds surpassing the collections of Hindi films, trade guru Taran Adarsh says, “It is low tide at the box office at the moment. But there is a big season ahead of us now with the IPL 9 getting over. Hopefully, things will change when Housefull 3 hits theatres this Friday. It is a brand and there is good buzz around it. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed.”
