A rush-hour stampede due to heavy rains killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 30 on Friday at Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road station. PTI
The tragedy took place around 10:40 am when the foot over-bridge was heavily crowded and rumours of short-circuit and bridge collapse led to panic among the commuters. PTI
The people injured during the stampede were immediately rushed to nearby KEM hospital with the help of RPF officials. Reuters
Within few hours of the calamity, KEM hospital issued a list of casualties and displayed the names of people injured to help relatives check names of their family members. PTI
However, KEM hospital also displayed mugshot pictures of the bodies of 22 victims posted on a wall with numbers across their foreheads that sparked a row. Firstpost/ Suraj Prasad
By late afternoon, as the death toll climbed, relatives of the deceased mourned the loss of their family members outside KEM hospital. AP
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal immediately took stock of the situation and visited the location. Maharashtra Government also announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to family members of the victim. AP
