The Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu-starrer Judwaa 2 seems nowhere close to being done at the box office, with its collections still registering growth after its release on 29 September. The latest reports even claim the movie has already crossed Rs 210 crore in collections globally, making its earnings surpass those of Akshay Kumar’s hit, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.
If its trajectory holds, Judwaa 2 could emerge as one of the biggest hits of 2017 from Bollywood. At present, it is only behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees (Rs 139 crore; domestic). Judwaa 2’s collections amount to Rs 134.28 crore in India at present ( as per trade portal KoiMoi.com), with Toilet: Ek Prem Katha at Rs 134.25 crore.
The Varun Dhawan-starrer witnessed an impressive run in its first week, following it up with a healthy second week despite the release of Saif Ali Khan’s Chef. In its third week too, the collections have continued strong.
With Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar scheduled to release on 19 October and Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal Again ready to hit screens on 20 October, it will be an interesting box office battle with Judwaa 2 still running successfully.
For Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox, Judwaa 2 has become a major earner. For Nadiadwala’s banner especially, Judwaa 2 seems to be second only to Salman Khan’s Kick in collections. Fox’s biggest money-spinners include Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Bang Bang apart from Judwaa 2.
The year 2017 is clearly Varun Dhawan’s — having delivered two back-to-back Rs 100 crore movies with Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2. Varun will be the next and the youngest celebrity to have a statue at Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong, joining the figures of Mahatma Gandhi, Narendra Modi and Amitabh Bachchan.
