Mahindra To Launch Toyota Fortuner Rival
Mahindra's premium SUV will be a rebadged version of the Ssangyong Rexton. The Ssangyong badge will be dropped in India.
Indian automaker Mahindra is set to launch an all-new premium SUV in the Indian market which will rival the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
According to Autocar India, the all-new Mahindra SUV will be a rebadged version of the next generation Ssangyong Rexton which was previewed in Paris in the form of the LIV-2 concept SUV.
The Rexton itself will not be coming to India with Mahindra set to remove its South Korean subsidiary from the Indian Market thanks to lacklustre sales.
The current Rexton, which is the only Ssangyong on sale in India logged sales figures of just 146 units from January - December 2016.
The LIV-2 concept is 4.85 metres long, 1.96 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall, which indicates that the new Mahindra SUV will be a full-sized, 7-seater SUV.
Powering the production Mahindra SUV will be two BS-VI compliant engines, one petrol and one diesel which will be mated to both manual and automatic gearboxes.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 222bhp and 349Nm of torque and is mated to 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.
The 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine cranks out 181bhp and 420Nm of torque and is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
The LIV-2's wheelbase is 2,865mm long which is a full 120mm longer than the Fortuner's which will give the Mahindra an advantage with regards to interior space over its Japanese rival.
The interiors of the new Mahindra SUV are expected to make use of the 9.2-inch infotainment display, though the large 10-inch displays at the rear may only be offered as an optional extra.
The top-of-the-line Mahindra SUV is expected to launch by December 2017 and is likely to bear the XUV7OO badge. The new premium Mahindra SUV is expected to undercut the Fortuner by a massive Rs 4-5 lakh.
