This year's biggest award has been announced and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

As the name suggest, the group is known for its work in the field of nuclear disarmament.

Here's all you must know about the coalition:

What: ICAN is a coalition of non-governmental organisations spread in 100 countries promoting adherence to and implementation of the United Nations nuclear weapon ban treaty.

When: The group was officially launched in Austrian capital Vienna in 2007. The campaign was largely inspired by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines that had played an instrumental role in the negotiation of the anti-personnel mine ban convention, better known as Ottawa treaty.

Where: With its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the group organises global days of action, hold public awareness-raising events, and engage in advocacy at the United Nations and in national parliaments. The campaign also works with survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing and nuclear tests, helping share their testimonies with the public and decision makers.

Who: The coalition has a steering group, staff team and partner organisations. ICAN operates on a partnership model. Any organisation that agrees with the campaign’s goals may become an ICAN partner organisation. Partners pledge to promote the objective of a nuclear weapon ban treaty.

Why: The core goal of the organisation is to eliminate nuclear weapons from the planet. The biggest victory was in July when a treaty banning the nuclear weapons was approved at the United Nations. The treaty was endorsed by 122 countries at the UN after months of negotiation.
