SIGNIFICANCE
Goddess Durga is worshipped in nine different avatars, day and night, during these nine days (Nav-ratri). Nine incarnations Goddess Shailputri, Brahmcharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandmata, Katyaini, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhatri are worshiped during these nine days.
The most awaited festival for Hindus is celebrated to worship the idols of goddess and observe fast for nine days. According to Hindu mythology, on the first day of this festival a pot is put up at the sanctified place in the house. This procedure is called 'Ghatsthapana' and is a symbol of universe.
An uninterrupted lamp is also lit at the first day to worship the Adishakti- the supreme cosmic power (Goddess Durga). This tradition of burning of an oil lamp (deepam) during these nine days, is believed to help reduce negative energies and signifies light of knowledge.
CELEBRATIONS
Navratri, this year will commence on 21st September, Thursday and end on 29th September. Celebrations in different states have different colours of festivities to showcase. Most popularly celebrated in Gujarat by dancing Garba all night or by worshiping the Goddess in Durga Puja in Bengal.
The distant flavour of this festive season is marked as Navratri. The temples lit across the streets, crowded markets, and some sweet relishes in the mithai ki dukaans. Navratri has it all. On the eve of Navaratri, we wish you a happy, healthy and a wealthy life.
