Citing the Election Commission's guidelines, the Ahmedabad Police have denied permission to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi and PAAS leader Hardik Patel to hold roadshows in the city.

A K Singh, city police commissioner, said, "We have denied permission for all the roadshows due to law and order as well as security concerns. It would have caused much public inconvenience as all the rallies were overlapping."

"We have brought it to the notice of organisers our inability to manage the situation because an EC guidelines on roadshows emphasise on public convenience. Roadshows are expected to be done in a manner that the public is not inconvenienced." Singh added.

The routes proposed for the roadshows were through crowed areas, busy markets, railway stations, bus stands, the walled city, etc.

It would have required a large deployment of police personnel to manage so many roadshows, Singh noted.

The roadshows of Modi and Rahul were scheduled for Tuesday (December 12), while Hardik's event was to take place on Monday. The public meeting was granted permission, but not the roadshow. However, he was allowed to move in his small convoy of four to five vehicles on the routes with small welcome events at some points.

Modi will now address members, MPs and MLAs of the party's OBC cell through an audio bridge on Tuesday, the BJP said.

The campaigning for the second phase of the Assembly elections will come to an end at 5 PM on Tuesday.
