With an aim to understand and streamline services and operations at the Regional Transport Office here and in Gandhinagar, a team of CEPT University, including students, has come up with solutions that would bypass middlemen and reduce the time taken to avail the services.
The team headed by professor Mercy Samuel from Faculty of Management at CEPT university studied the services and operations of RTO – Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar as part of their studio project and proposed measures to streamline these operations for more efficiency.
Samuel said that this study was a part of a services improvement studio where this time a total of nine students of Masters in Urban Management looked into transport services focussing on RTO. She said, "While they looked at licensing procedures at RTO Gandhinagar, they looked at the registration of vehicles issue at RTO Ahmedabad. Using different tools and mechanisms required to streamline the entire process, the students kept citizen at the centre and looked in various aspects including the managing crowd, time management, renewal of licenses, transfer of ownership, learners license, etc.
The students came up with interesting solutions that included manning of entry and exit points to manage the crowd and reduce time, setting up a different model with a third party inspection for vehicles, similar to what happens with passport services.
Samuel said, "We suggested decentralizing the services like Passport Seva Kendras so that they do not need to wait for so long. We have also suggested queue management, signage, colour coded pathways, etc."
