Major nominees snub 59th Grammys even as Beyonce looks to win big

However, the show must go on, and so it will. This year's Grammys will be hosted by James Corden of Carpool Karaoke fame, and feature performances from the newly pregnant Threeyonce (Beyonce + 2), Adele, The Weeknd, Daft Punk, Chance the Rapper and more.

Lady Gaga will also be performing in arguably the most interesting/bizarre performance of the night - a duet with heavy metal legends Metallica, while Katy Perry will be performing a new single titled 'Chained to the Rhythm'.

The big contenders

The performances though, are merely the foil to the main feature of the night - the awards. The Grammys have 84 different categories, and the industry's top guns are pitted against each other to see who will take home the most awards.

Predictably, Beyonce is the artist with the most nominations (9), and will be hoping to add to her 20 previous Grammy wins. However, while she is nominated for the big three - best record, album and song of the year - her record when it comes to winning the big three is patchy. She has only one best song once, having been nominated for, but never winning the other two. Making this harder for Beyonce is Adele, whose five nominations include the big three.

Apart from the two women, the other artists looking to win big this year are Drake, Kanye and Rihanna, all with eight nominations, while the current toast of the hip hop world, Chance the Rapper, has cemented his credentials with an impressive seven. Justin Bieber (4) and Jack White (3) are the other notable muti-category nominees.

Interestingly, David Bowie, who is nominated in 4 different categories, could win more Grammys posthumously than he did while he was alive. He has only won one Grammy so far.

Are the Grammys out of touch

While the world will undoubtedly tune in to catch the latest iteration of music's biggest awards show, the Grammys have faced a lot of criticism as well. While Drake won't be at the awards because of his Boy Meets World tour in the UK, acts like Bieber and Kanye pulled out because of issues with awards.

Kanye West pulled out following his earlier statement that he wouldn't attend if Frank Ocean wasn't nominated. When that didn't happen, West predictably decided to snub the awards. However, Ocean didn't even submit his album for awards consideration, but rather than make the Grammys seem more in touch, it actually makes the Grammys seem a lot less important. "I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated," Ocean told NYT.

He isn't exactly wrong, and the 'best rock song' category is the perfect example. Two of the five nominees are songs from movie soundtracks rather than albums, while Beyonce has also managed a nomination in the category, sort of like when The Martian was nominated in the Best Comedy category.
