From Pawan Kalyan to Chiranjeevi, Tollywood is high on Tamil remakes

While it is not a new practice for Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh, who have done in many Tamil remakes in the past, but Pawan Kalyan and Megastar's son are making a foray into this space now.

Cinema as an art form is borrowed from many ideas, experiences and other movie of same or different languages. While most of them tend to imitate bits and pieces or maybe sometimes take a big piece of the cake, anything overdone shows lack of creativity, lethargy or a deep interest in commercial aspects of the scripts.

In recent times, a similar trend seems to have seeped into Tollywood industry, which is remaking Tamil movies to launch big-ticket stars. While it is not a new practice for Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh, who have done in many Tamil remakes in the past, but Pawan Kalyan and Megastar’s son are making a foray into this space now.

Here are some of the movies that aim to recreate Tamil spell.

Ram Charan Teja (Dhruva)

After his fantastic hits like Magadheera and Chirutha, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s son is starring in a popular Tamil remake of Jayam Ravi’s Thani Oruvan. The actor will be playing a daredevil cop in the movie. Under Surender Reddy’s direction, the movie also roped in Rakul Preet Singh and Arvind Swamy. The movie is slated for release in the first week of December.

Venkatesh (Guru)

Nearly after a decade, Venky is starring as a boxing coach — reprising Madhavan’s role — in the official remake of critically acclaimed Tamil sports drama, Irudhi Suttru. The film also features newcomer Ritika Singh as an aspiring boxer, coached by Madhavan in the movie. Under Sudha Kongara’s direction, the movie is being bankrolled by Y Not Studios, which had produced the original film too.

Chiranjeevi (Khaidi No 150)

Chiru’s comeback 150th film, after a gap of 10 years, is a remake of 2014 Tamil hit Kaththi starring Vijay. Under VV Vinayak’s directiom, the project will be bankrolled by Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan, who will co-produce the film along with Lyca Productions. The movie highlights the issue of farmer suicides in the country.

Pawan Kalyan (Katamarayudu, another untitled movie)

For the first time, the power star is starring in remakes and he is doing two in succession. The actor is currently busy with the shooting of Katamarayudu, which is a remake of Tamil movie Veeram starring Ajith. The film will release on Sankranti. Soon after, the actor will start working on another project with Jilla director R T Neason, which is again a Telugu remake of Ajith’s Vedalam.
