Bobcats on Sedona wall

Photo Contest Entry

Real Life

Animals

The Picture Above is the Entry

I was opening the shutters in my bedroom and saw three bobcat "kittens" sitting on the wall behind my house.  They were relaxing and playing just like any domestic kitten would.  I had to get a picture!

The angle of where the kittens were sitting was such that I had to shoot through the screen in the window.  If I tried to shoot a picture from another angle, I might have scared them off. So quietly, I got my camer and as I snapped the picture the one bodcat saw the camera in the window and stared right at it.  This is a picture I couldn't have planned any better.  It is also one of my favorite photos.  Because it was shot through a screen, it has a fuzzy look to it that acts as a special effect!

Bobcats

There is a wash that starts above Coffeepot Rock where their feeding grounds are.  But during bouts of rain or snow, these bobcats follow the wash down to our area, where the food source may be more plentiful.  We see these kittens a couple of times a year around our neighborhood and in our backyard.

Good morning Sheri.  I want to go back to the country watch the wildlife play in our backyard.  Won't see any of that where we live now however, the day isn't over.

Hi James Dray - when I lived in the metropolitan area of SoCal, we rarely saw wildlife.  So it was a little scary, when we came to Sedona. It did not take us long to embrace and love it.

Hi Nina Hollander - The one bobcat saw the camera and looked right into it. But didn't move or run away. I was shocked. It was like he/she actually posed!  I couldn't believe it.

Such a cool scene!  They look so friendly, are they indeed friendly or should one be worried about them attacking?

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Hi Brian England - As long as they are not rabid, they will just ignore you and move away unless they feel trapped or threatened.  We see them a couple of times a year and they ignore us. They have actually come within 5 feet of the house.  We stay vigilant.

Sheri, I'm so jealous!!!  What an incredible opportunity and I LOVED what you wrote, because I know only too well, the opportunities presented to us with some obstacles for shooting wildlife and you have a choice; try to get a better photo, OR just go with it so as not to miss this once-in-a-lifetime (graced) moment. I love this photo so much!!!!!

Sheri,

So glad Patricia Kennedy featured it.  This is superb.  In our first home we had here, I saw a bobcat strolling by the picture window of our home, and at first I thought it was an exotic cat.  Minutes later, I realized that it was not, and made sure our cats were inside.  They are gorgeous as are the kitttens...Wow you outdid yourself.  A
